Study Permit Extension in Canada - What International Students Need to Know

Studying in Canada is a rewarding and life-changing experience. But as an international student, staying compliant with IRCC regulations is critical to maintaining your legal status and uninterrupted education.

One key requirement is ensuring your study permit remains valid throughout your academic journey.

When Do You Need to Extend Your Study Permit?
You must apply to extend your study permit if:

  • Your current study permit will expire before your program ends
  • You've transferred to a longer program or new institution
  • You're starting a new program after completing your current one
  • You plan to continue studies while awaiting permanent residency decisions

As per IRCC 2025 updates, students must be enrolled in a PGWP-eligible program at a DLI to remain eligible for work after graduation. Ensure your new program or extension still qualifies.

How to Apply for a Study Permit Extension
All applications for extensions must be submitted online to IRCC. This includes:

  • Study permit renewals and extensions from within Canada
  • Temporary resident status extensions (TRV + study permit)
  • Any new study permit application from inside Canada

When to Apply:
At least 30 days before your current study permit expires. Applying early helps you maintain implied status, meaning you can legally continue studying while awaiting a decision.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
If your study permit expires before you apply, you may:

  • Have up to 90 days to apply for a restoration of status
  • Cannot study or work during this time until IRCC restores your status

If you applied before the expiry of your current permit, you may continue your studies under implied status — provided your study conditions remain the same.

Changing your institution, level of study, or program may require a brand new study permit — not just an extension. We help you determine what's needed. Additionally, a provincial attestation letter (PAL) or its exemption might be required while submitting the application.

TRV vs. Study Permit: Do You Need to Renew Both?
Your study permit allows you to stay and study in Canada.
Your Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) allows you to enter or re-enter Canada.

  • If you're not planning to leave Canada, you do not need to renew your TRV
  • If you plan to travel home or visit another country, ensure your TRV is valid before returning to Canada

Reminder: Most TRVs expire alongside your study permit. Always check both documents before international travel.
