Canada Citizenship Eligibility & Physical Presence Calculator

Estimate your adult Canadian citizenship physical presence using the current rolling 5-year rule, then screen key requirements that may need attention before you apply.

730minimum days as a permanent resident
1

Application & Permanent Resident Details

The eligibility period ends the day before this proposed signing/application date.

Select an application date to calculate the 5-year eligibility period.
This calculator is designed for adult applications. Minor 5(1) and 5(2) routes have different requirements, so a minor result must be reviewed separately.
2

Absences After Becoming a Permanent Resident

Add trips outside Canada during the 5-year eligibility period after you became a PR. The calculator counts the departure and return dates as days in Canada and subtracts the full days between them.

Overlapping or duplicate trips are automatically merged so the same day is not subtracted twice.
3

Eligible Time in Canada Before PR

Add only periods when you were physically in Canada with eligible temporary-resident status, or after protected-person approval. Each eligible day counts as 0.5 day, to a maximum credit of 365 days.

Do not include time waiting for a refugee claim decision. If you left Canada during a pre-PR period, split the period so only days physically in Canada are entered.
4

Special Physical-Presence Situations

Some exceptions exist, so do not guess.

Crown-servant cases require special supporting documentation.

Add only date ranges that you have confirmed do not count toward citizenship physical presence. These dates are treated as inclusive and are not double-subtracted if they overlap an absence.

Qualifying Crown-servant/family-member time outside Canada can count, but the legal criteria are specialized. This calculator will not automatically add that time; the final result will be marked for review so it does not give a false answer.
5

Key Adult Citizenship Requirements

IRCC says you may need to file taxes for at least 3 years during the 5 years before applying.

Adults 18–54 generally need speaking and listening at CLB/NCLC 4 or higher with accepted proof.

Applicants age 18–54 must also take the citizenship test after applying. This pre-application screen does not treat an uncompleted future test as a failure.

    How the Calculator Protects Accuracy

    • Overlapping PR trips are merged before subtraction.
    • Overlapping pre-PR periods are merged before the 0.5-day credit is applied.
    • Confirmed non-countable sentence periods are not double-subtracted if they overlap a trip.
    • Special Crown-servant cases are flagged instead of guessed.

    Important

IRCC encourages applicants to have more than exactly 1,095 days in case a date or absence is miscalculated. This SIA tool is a screening estimator and does not replace IRCC's official physical-presence calculation or an individual legal assessment.

Information tool only. Adult citizenship rules generally require valid PR status, at least 1,095 days of physical presence in the 5-year eligibility period including at least 730 days as a PR, tax filing if required, language proof and the citizenship test for ages 18–54, and no applicable prohibition. Special rules and waivers can apply. Official sources: Citizenship eligibility · Physical presence.
