Main Occupation Categories

  • STEM
  • Trades
  • Education
  • Transport

For these categories, the current rule is at least 12 months of qualifying full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time) in one listed occupation within the past 3 years. The experience may be in Canada or abroad and does not need to be continuous.

Canadian-Experience Categories

  • Physicians with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience

These categories require at least 12 months of qualifying experience in Canada within the past 3 years in one of their listed occupations.

PhysiciansNOC 31100, 31101 and 31102 appear in both Healthcare & Social Services and the separate Physicians with Canadian Work Experience category.
Skilled Military RecruitsThis is a special category with additional Foreign Skilled Military Applicant, Canadian Armed Forces job offer, service and education requirements.
Category ≠ Automatic ITAEligible category candidates are still ranked by CRS score. IRCC invites the top-ranking candidates in the relevant round.
Important: an occupation does not need to appear in a category-based list for a person to be eligible for Express Entry. You must first qualify for at least one Express Entry program—Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program. Category-based selection is an additional way IRCC can issue invitations.
