Visitor Visa to Attend a Graduation Ceremony in Canada
Parents, relatives and friends who need a visa to travel to Canada for a student's graduation normally apply for a regular Canada Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa).
There is no separate IRCC visa category called a “Graduation Visitor Visa.” Graduation is simply the purpose of travel supporting a normal Visitor Visa application.
Purpose of Travel
- Graduation or convocation invitation, ceremony notice or registration where available.
- Student's graduation/convocation details.
- Travel dates and a reasonable itinerary.
Invitation & Relationship
- A letter from the student or family member in Canada may support the application.
- Explain the relationship between the visitor and graduate.
- Include the host's Canadian status and contact details where relevant.
Financial Support
- Show sufficient funds for travel, accommodation and daily expenses.
- If another person will pay, clearly document who is providing support and their ability to do so.
- IRCC does not publish a fixed “graduation visit” bank-balance requirement.
Temporary Visit
- The applicant must satisfy IRCC that the stay is temporary.
- Employment, family, financial or other ties may help explain the plan to return.
- The applicant must meet normal admissibility and visitor requirements.

Invitation letters help explain the purpose of the visit, but do not guarantee approval. IRCC decides whether the applicant meets all temporary resident requirements.
Do not purchase non-refundable travel solely because a graduation date is approaching. Visa processing times vary by country and application circumstances, and there is no guaranteed graduation-specific processing time.
