New policy for former international students to extend their expired post graduate work permits

On January 8, 2021, IRCC has announced a new public policy under COVID-19 pandemic for former
international students having expired or about to expire post graduate work permit. Former students
can now extend their post graduate work permit for 18 months under this new policy.

You may be eligible to apply if you meet following conditions.

To apply for an open work permit under the new policy, the following criteria must be met:

you must have a PGWP that expired on or after January 30, 2020 or a PGWP that expires in 4 months or less from the date of application.

you need to be in Canada.

you need to have a valid temporary status, or you are applying to restore your status.

The application process will be open from January 27 to July 27, 2021.

News did spread a wave of relief and happiness amongst former international students who were before
thinking that they have lost the fair chance of gaining Canadian work experience due to pandemic.
Government once again proved that Canada believes strongly in fairness and stands by all its residents
despite of their temporary or permanent status in country.

Please note that if your work permit has been expired for over 90 days you can still apply under this
program because you are eligible to restore your status in Canada until August 2021 under that another
public policy that was announced on January 1, 2021.
