Spousal and Family Sponsorship in Canada: Bring Your Loved Ones Closer

Spousal and family sponsorship can help eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents and persons registered under the Indian Act reunite with a spouse, partner or certain family members in Canada. The correct process depends on who you want to sponsor, where they live and whether both the sponsor and applicant meet the current requirements.

This spousal and family sponsorship guide explains the main pathways for spouses and partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents, adopted children and certain other relatives—and shows where to begin.

Spousal sponsorship — main pathway

Spousal sponsorship for a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner

Spousal sponsorship is the principal family-reunification pathway for couples. The relationship must be genuine, and the appropriate application class depends on the couple’s circumstances.

Three recognized relationship categories

The documents and evidence must reflect the category being claimed—not only the couple’s preferred label.

SpouseLegally married, with both partners at least 18 and in a genuine relationship.
Common-law partnerGenerally requires at least 12 continuous months of living together in a conjugal relationship.
Conjugal partnerA narrow Family Class option where serious barriers prevent marriage or cohabitation.

Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class

May be appropriate where the eligible applicant is living in Canada with the sponsor. Temporary status, travel plans and work authorization should be considered carefully.

Family Class

Outside Canada or other qualifying circumstances

Commonly used where the applicant is abroad. Conjugal partners use the Family Class, and some applicants living in Canada may also apply through this route.

Visitor visa while PR is processing

A spouse or partner outside Canada may apply for a visitor visa after the sponsorship application is submitted. After an Acknowledgement of Receipt, qualifying visitor visa applications may receive faster processing, but approval is never automatic.

Open work permit in Canada

An eligible sponsored spouse or partner living in Canada with the sponsor may apply for an open work permit under current rules, normally after IRCC issues the permanent residence Acknowledgement of Receipt.

Submitting a sponsorship or work permit application does not itself authorize employment. The applicant must have separate work authorization or wait for permit approval.

Family sponsorship for children, parents and other relatives

Canada’s family class includes more than couples, but each category has different eligibility and intake rules. Some options are open, paused or available only in very limited situations.

Open

Dependent children

A biological or adopted child generally qualifies as a dependant when under 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship. A child aged 22 or older may qualify in limited circumstances involving a physical or mental condition and continuing financial dependency.

Paused

Parents and grandparents

IRCC is not currently accepting new interest-to-sponsor forms or issuing new invitations under the Parents and Grandparents Program. Existing applications continue to be processed. Eligible family members may consider the Super Visa as a separate temporary-visit option.

Open

Adopted children

An eligible parent may sponsor a child adopted from another country. Immigration and adoption processes must both be satisfied, and provincial or territorial and foreign-country requirements can also apply.

Limited eligibility

Certain other relatives

This is not a general pathway for adult siblings, cousins, aunts or uncles. Narrow rules may cover certain orphaned relatives under 18 or, in exceptional situations, one other relative where the sponsor has no qualifying close family connection.

Do not assume every relative can be sponsored

The relationship alone does not create eligibility. The sponsor’s status, residence, previous undertakings, financial obligations and possible sponsorship bars must be reviewed together with the family member’s category and admissibility.

Can you be a sponsor?

Eligibility depends on the sponsorship category and your personal circumstances. These are the core starting points.

Be at least 18 years old.
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or eligible person registered under the Indian Act.
Meet the applicable residence requirements. Permanent residents living abroad cannot sponsor.
Sign the sponsorship agreement and financial undertaking.
Not be affected by an applicable sponsorship bar or ineligibility rule.
Meet any category-specific income requirement where one applies.

Match the family relationship and living situation to the correct sponsorship route.

Confirm eligibility

Review sponsor status, restrictions, undertakings, income rules and applicant eligibility.

Prepare the evidence

Organize identity, civil-status, relationship, financial and category-specific supporting documents.

Submit and follow up

File the complete application, monitor messages and respond carefully to additional requests.

Identity and civil-status records
Relationship and family evidence
Residence and immigration documents
Financial proof where required
Medical and police requirements
Complete and consistent forms

Keep your spousal or family sponsorship application on the right path.

Review the relationship category, sponsor eligibility, supporting evidence and immigration strategy together before filing.
