Study permits and visas

A student that desires to carry out any academic enrolment in a Canadian school must obtain a study permit.

One of the requirements to be met when applying for a study permit is that the applicant must show that he or she has successfully applied to a Canadian school for an enrolment into an academic program and has received a letter of acceptance by the Canadian School. The academic program must be for at least the duration of six months.

Another basic condition to be met will be any necessary travel documents including a valid passport.

There is a list of designated learning institutions provided by the government which must be recognized before the grant of a study permit. Therefore, it is important for the applicant to ensure that the institution he or she wishes to apply to is on the list.

The study permit is granted based on the duration of the academic program. In some cases, where the admission is conditional upon the successful passing of some courses, then the study permit will be given for the duration of that course and once the applicant has been fully accepted, an application can be made for the extension of the study permit.
